Program description: A student who is d eaf b lind and may also have other complicating conditions needs ACCESS to what and who is in this world! Providing opportunities to move and learn is important for concept, communication and language development. Lilli Nielsen was a person who understood thi s and provided wonderful ways for the student to experience and gain knowledge. This presentation will present some of those ways along with many other ways for the student to be in action and learn, even those with some physical limitations. Videos will b e used during the presentation to clarify specific points.

Guest speaker: Kathee Scoggin, a sought-after trainer on topics relating to children with multiple disabilities including students with combined vision and hearing loss, both in Washington and nationally. Kathee has 40+ years of experience as a teacher, assessment specialist, principal, and educational consultant with children (birth to 21) with combined vision and hearing loss including deafblindness. Kathee also was a team leader in the NCDB OHOA modules: Modules on The Sensory System, Availability for Learning, Intervener Strategies, and Use of Touch. She holds a B.A. in Deaf Education and M.Ed. in Special Education with an emphasis on vision disabilities and complex medical conditions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain active learning and how it makes learning possible for the student who is deafblind and other complicating conditions
  • Identify three major points of providing active learning opportunities
  • Complete a form that gives direction to implementing active learning opportunities throughout their student’s day.
  • Collect information on how to keep data on a student’s progress
