The U.S. Department of Education’s (USDOE) Office of Educational Technology (OET) and the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) has issued joint written guidance to support the implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in the area of Assistive Technology (AT). The January 22, 2024, Dear Colleagues letter and the written guidance Myths and Facts Surrounding Assistive Technology Devices and Services were developed in response to questions raised by parents, educators, advocates and state educational agencies. The Myths and Facts Surrounding Assistive Technology Devices and Services guidance document helps to support children with disabilities who need assistive technology (AT) devices and services for meaningful access and engagement in education. The Myths and Facts Surrounding Assistive Technology Devices and Services guidance document can be helpful to IEP teams as they determine what AT devices would improve outcomes for a student who is deafblind.
